We Are.....Blind Love

The recent accolades of Penn State's THON charity event is something to be proud of and truly inspiring. By no means is this meant to take away from that. However, Penn State can not simply forget that they hid a child molestation scandal so their football program could flourish. Most of the student body seems to disagree.

This blog will likely be the most unpopular I have ever written. I am writing a piece that, in some ways, attacks Penn State University at a time where every other Penn State student has said the word "THON" more often than any English word in the dictionary since February 1. THON is what people refer to as the IFC/Panhellenic Two-Day Dance Marathon held annually at Penn State University. FTK is the slogan, which stands for "For The Kids". THON is a year-long event held to raise money for pediatric cancer and to also raise awareness for the Four Diamonds Fund, an organization that helps families dealing with cancer. The entire celebration is something for everyone involved to be proud of. THON raised over 12 million dollars this year, a new record for the event that has been around since 1973.

In no way am I attacking cancer research and charitable events that raise money for awareness and a cure. I fully support that, since I have a heart, and think this cause is awesome. It is inspiring how much money THON has helped raise for such a disastrous disease that takes the lives of millions of innocent people on a yearly basis. Twelve million dollars is something to be proud of. A two day dance marathon is something to be proud of. Standing up for such an inspiring cause is something to be proud of.

Covering up a child molestation scandal in order to protect your football program and a coach is viewed as a god to Penn State students is nothing to be proud of, nor forgotten.

It seems like that trips up those Penn State diehards.

How quickly we forgot, right? On more than one occasion in the past few days have I seen posts online from Penn State students claiming they go to the "best university in the world". Really? You go to a school that covered up the raping and molestation of multiple young men by an evil football coach, Jerry Sandusky. Why? To protect the beloved and heralded Penn State football program, which surely would have suffered had news gotten out. We can't have that happen! No more football?!

Roughly a year later, and the scandal has cost Penn State close to $30 million in lawsuit bills and other expenses. This tab is not even counting the sixty million dollar fine, that mind you, has been criticized by Penn State supporters. What argument could a rational person have for thinking sixty million dollars is too hefty a price for at least ten victims whose molestation at the hands of a football coach was kept secret for years? That's simply disgusting. I have heard so many people, all of whom attend or attended Penn State at some point, claim the fine was too hefty and the football program was wrongly punished. They all said that Penn State doesn't deserve the sanctions from the NCAA. It is making me sick to type that people can feel that way.

I understand that those people had nothing to do with the entire scandal, and I understand the football players on the team had nothing to do with it either. It doesn't matter. The school needs to be punished. THEY HID A CHILD MOLESTATION SCANDAL! How can that be supported? How could anyone be so blind as to understand that the school had their priorities in the absolute wrong place and that punishments should follow. To this day I do not understand why the school has a football program and did not feel the death penalty from the NCAA. I am a very open minded person and I have no argument for the NCAA not banning football at Penn State for good. I would have fully supported that as a small cost for the lives these victims have lost and the injustice and disrespect they have endured so the Nittany Lions could continue to play for the fucking National Championship.

And God forbid Joe Paterno's legacy take a hit because of this, because he could have nothing to do with such a scandal.

The blind love for Penn State these people have is unearthing.

The harsh truth Penn State guru's need to wake up to: Penn State is not the best university in the world because, be it in the past, they still thought it was better to sweep a child molestation scandal under the rug so their football program could continue without a black eye. Their heralded and adored football coach, Joe Paterno, is not divine and perfect like they thought and actually is very flawed and small. THON is an awesome cause, but it does not give the school an excuse or equal out the incredible, inhumane and disgusting crimes they have committed in the past decade.

Penn State University will always be the school that hid a child molestation scandal because  of how heinous a crime that was. People have forgotten about other crimes schools have committed because there has never been such a disgusting crime that could not be defended at all. I will never forget how great a cause THON is, and I will never forget about the victims that were completely disregarded by the university. The students are not at fault for the actions of the administration, that is obviously not what I am getting at. The students are just responsible for the blind obsessions with the school they attend. The people who tell us to forget about the child molestation scandal and move on and to look at THON to see how great Penn State really is are valuing these children with cancer over the victims of Jerry Sandusky. That isn't fair, we are all equal and all of those kids deserve our prayers. Penn State, a year later, deserves the NCAA death penalty, in my opinion. We Are...Afraid To Lose Our Legacy. I Am...Disgusted.
